Will the Treasurer and, for that matter, the federal governement, ever get it?
Federal Treasurer Peter Costello says there is no point in Australia reducing its greenhouse gas emissions when China and India are such major global polluters.
"There's no point in Australia meeting its emissions target - and we are on track to do so, and I believe we ought to do so when we're less than 1 per cent of global emissions - if you're going to have major emitters such as China and India, which are increasing every year the emissions by more than the total of Australia,"
Which is like saying it is not worth me turning the tap off while I clean my teeth because industry uses heaps of water anyway...my little bit is just isn't worth doing.

Our Mr Downer/Costello and others lobbied China and India not to adopt any emissions targets, and instead to sign up to Australia's meaningless 'technology, but no targets' treaty. Then Mr Downer turns up in London, and says Australia couldn't possibly sign up to Kyoto's targets because China and India won't. Now Costello is selling the same myth.
Monbiot likened it to a murderer in court, charged with killing his parents, pleading for mercy because he's now an orphan.
And guess what's driving all those Chinese emissions anyway.. it's so we can fill our warehouses and cubboards with everything stamped 'Made in China'. If we stop consuming, China will stop producing. But that wouldn't be good for the economy, would it Mr Costello?
